Background of the Study: Patients with disabilities, whether due to congenital conditions, trauma, or illness, often face significant barriers to reintegration into society. These barriers include social stigma, physical inaccessibility, and psychological challenges. Nurses play a critical role in supporting disabled patients during their rehabilitation journey, not only through physical rehabilitation but also through psychological support, community reintegration strategies, and advocacy (Adeyemo et al., 2023). In Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State, disabled patients frequently experience difficulties in reintegrating into society after receiving medical treatment, partly due to inadequate support systems and lack of awareness among healthcare providers and the general population about disability issues.
Nurses are in a unique position to assist with the reintegration process by offering emotional support, coordinating social services, providing information about accessible resources, and encouraging family and community involvement (Yusuf et al., 2024). However, there is limited exploration of the specific roles nurses play in the reintegration process, especially in the context of Katsina State hospitals, where healthcare infrastructure is still developing and rehabilitation services may be scarce. This study aims to investigate the role of nurses in supporting the reintegration of disabled patients into society, focusing on their contributions and identifying the challenges they face in providing this support.
Statement of the Problem: Despite the importance of social reintegration for disabled patients, there is a gap in understanding the role of nurses in facilitating this process, particularly in Katsina State. Disabled patients often struggle with isolation, discrimination, and limited access to resources, which hinders their reintegration into society. This study seeks to explore the impact of nurses’ interventions on the social reintegration of disabled patients and identify barriers to successful reintegration in Federal Medical Centre, Katsina State.
